Singapore police arrest four migrant workers for fighting

Singapore: Singapore police have arrested four foreign workers for fighting in the Little India area, a precinct of Indian-origin businesses.

The four, aged 24 to 30, were arrested from the Jurong industrial region on the West Coast after police had reviewed footage from the closed circuit television installed in the area to monitor security, peace and public safety.

The four are believed to be migrant workers from South Asia, The Straits Times reported today.

Preliminary investigations revealed the four had consumed liquor and a dispute had broken out between them on Tuesday night.

They were arrested on Wednesday night, police said.

Chander Road, where the four fought, lies within the designated special zone in Little India where restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol apply on weekends, the eve of public holidays and on public holidays.

The alcohol restrictions were imposed after some 400 migrant workers from South Asia rioted on the night of December 8 last year, leaving 49 police and Home Team officers injured and 23 emergency vehicles damaged, five of which were torched.

The riot was sparked by the death of an Indian national in a bus accident.

Central Police Division commander Daniel Tan said the police took a "serious view of offences disturbing the peace, especially those committed in public amenities, posing a threat to safety".

The four suspects, if convicted of affray, face a maximum punishment of one-year in jail and a fine of SGD 5,000. Little India is a precinct of Indian-origin businesses, eateries and pubs, popular with migrant workers from South Asia during their day offs, weekends and public holidays.
