Ottawa:
A gunman shot a Canadian soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Wednesday, police said. Witnesses said the gunman entered Parliament and shots rang out.
People fled Parliament by scrambling down scaffolding erected for renovations, witnesses told the Canadian Press news agency. The top spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Harper was safe and had left Parliament Hill.
Tony Clement, a senior government member of parliament, tweeted that shots were fired near where cabinet was meeting in Parliament. He said he was safe but still at risk.
Emergency responders are still on the scene and paramedics took the wounded soldier away in an ambulance.
The shooting, which happened shortly before 10 a.m., comes just two days after two Canadian soldiers were run over - and one of them killed - in Quebec by a man with jihadist sympathies.
