Sri Lanka: 28 killed in clashes

Colombo: At least 26 LTTE cadres, one soldier and a civilian were killed in fierce clashes in the embattled Northern Sri Lanka, officials said in on Thursday.

At least ten LTTE cadres and one security forces personnel was killed as the army claimed to have captured two square kilometres of ground in Adampan including the landmark tank in Mannar.

Separately one tiger rebel was killed in a confrontation at Parappakandal north in Mannar on Wednesday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.

In another incident, army killed three LTTE cadres in Kanthakulam North in Mannar on Wednesday, it said.

On the same day, the security forces personnel killed four tiger rebels in Chalampaikulam and one rebel in Sittanidi in North-western Mannar, the defence ministry said.

In another incident, the army gunned down one LTTE rebel in Vediyamurippu in Mannar on Wednesday during a confrontation.

While one rebel was shot dead in Kurukandal area in Mannar, as many as three LTTE cadres were killed in Palampidi in Vavuniya on Wednesday, the ministry said.

At least two tiger militants were gunned down in Navathkulam in Vavuniya on Wednesday, it said.

Meanwhile, one civilian was shot dead and another injured when unidentified gunmen shot at them in Punthottam in Vavuniya, the MCNS said.
