Colombo:

Citing the plight of refugees, and Indian and global pressure, the LTTE announced a unilateral ceasefire on Sunday. But it was promptly rejected by the Sri Lankan government.

"Declaring ceasefire is a joke. The LTTE has no capability of mounting offensive," said Sri Lanka Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona.

Sri Lanka's confidence stems from the gains it has made over the past week. It allowed over 100 thousand people to flee the war zone. And that perhaps allowed government troops to advance two km deeper into LTTE-held territory on Sunday and rescue 2,000 people.

As NDTV headed towards the battlefront, from Killinochchi to Puthukidiyarrupu, where the LTTE leadership is holed up in a small area of less than 5 sq km, it was discovered that the LTTE has lost a large chunk of its arsenal.

But it's still not clear how heavily armed the remaining LTTE fighters are, which is apart from their famous suicide pills. And the big question is - where is Prabhakaran?

For many, the 25-year-old Sri Lankan civil war will only be over, when the driving force of the LTTE is traced.
