Stillettos for speed and a cause

Lima, Peru: Women in Peru spent their Sunday morning taking part in a charity running event with a difference - each competitor was wearing high heeled shoes.

More than 100 women took part in the event to raise money for female victims of domestic violence.

Participants were required to wear heels at least two inches high to run the 150-meter race.

Organisers of the event said the high heels represented an obstacle in women's everyday lives.

The race was intended to demonstrate that all obstacles can be overcome.

Each runner paid an entry fee of seven US dollars, the sum of which will be donated to non-government organisations supporting women and children victims of domestic violence in Peru.
