Storm buries half of United States in snow

Chicago: A fearsome snowstorm has swept half the United States on Wednesday snarling transportation and burying many states under 2 feet of snow, leaving tens of millions of people stuck inside their houses.

Chicago's 20.2 inches of snow was the city's third-largest amount on record. In New York's Central Park, the pathways resembled skating rinks.

Roads have virtually shut down and Airport operations slowed to a crawl across the country with flight cancellations reaching 13,000 for the week. Multiple airports have temporarily shut down including Dallas, the destination for thousands of people trying to reach for Sunday's Super Bowl.

Jay Pollack, air passenger from Chicago: "What a mess, just an absolute mess. This is like unbelievable." said Jay Pollack, an air passenger from Chicago, who has been stuck at Reagan National Airport, just outside of DC.


Overnight temperatures in Midwest were expected to fall to minus 5 to minus 20 Celsius, with wind chills dropping to 20 to 30 below zero.

At least 12 people, mostly homeless have died due to the storm.
