Frankfurt: A strike by security staff at Frankfurt airport, Europe's third busiest, has so far led to the cancellation of 41 flights on Friday, an airport spokesman said.

"Currently, 41 flights have been cancelled, both incoming and outgoing," the spokesman for airport operator Fraport told AFP.

Further cancellations could not be ruled out during the course of the day, he added.

"At the moment, we're doing OK with regard to punctuality. No delays have been announced yet," he said.

Service industry union Verdi called on members employed by private security contractors to stay away from work between 0100 and 2200 GMT on Friday.

Verdi is fighting for an hourly wage rise to 16 euros ($22), calling an offer by employers of 10-13 euros "far too low".
