A man stuck at the flood gate of a reservoir was rescued on Thursday in Quanzhou City of Fujian Province after spending 5 hours struggling against the force of rushing floods, Chinese state television reported.

CCTV broadcast footage showing the man trapped in the middle of fast-flowing floods full of weeds, with rescuers trying to get hold of him to pull him up.

The man, who is over 50 years old managed to not let himself get washed away by floods by gripping weeds jammed at the flood gate of the reservoir.

However rescuers found he had been bound so tightly by the weeds they had to untangle him before they could pull the man up.

After a second attempt, the man was rescued from the water, CCTV reported.

According to official Xinhua News Agency, rainstorms that have been pelting south China since Sunday have left at least 42 people dead and 36 missing so far, the country's disaster relief authority said Wednesday.

Fujian Province is among the rainstorm-hit provinces in southern China.
