British Prime Minister David Cameron today said he would recall lawmakers from their summer break to debate the response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria.
Mr Cameron said the speaker had agreed to recall parliament on Thursday and a vote would be held on a government motion on how to respond to last Wednesday's suspected gas attack near Damascus, which Britain, France and the United States say was carried out by the Syrian regime.
"Speaker agrees my request to recall Parliament on Thurs," Mr Cameron said in a Twitter message.
"There'll be a clear Govt motion & vote on UK response to chemical weapons attacks," he said.
Mr Cameron's spokesman confirmed today that the British armed forces were drawing up contingency plans for military action in Syria, but that no decision had been made about what action may be taken.
Mr Cameron is continuing talks with other world leaders to agree a "proportionate response" to the alleged gas attack, which is believed to have left hundreds of people dead.
