There are nearly 2 million Sri Lankan Tamils living outside Sri Lanka. They have for years supported the Tamil political struggle. Even today pro LTTE websites are being run from outside Sri Lanka with images of Prabhakaran's dead body being flashed across the media. The Sri Lankan diaspora is now stepping up protests around the world.
For weeks now, Sri Lankan Tamilians have stood outside parliament here bringing to the world's attention the plight of the civilians caught up in the civil war in their homeland. Now there is a sense of mourning and a huge amount of anxiety about the future of the Tamilian community in Srilanka.
"Prabhakaran can never die. He is loved by all Tamils and will live in our hearts," said Jeevan, a protestor.
Protests were held outside the European Council in Brussels where foreign ministers were discussing the setting up of an independent enquiry to scrutinise the violations of human rights in Sri Lanka and in Geneva hundreds of Tamils protested outside the UN headquarters.
At the La Chappelle district in Paris, in the Sri Lankan Tamil dominated area, the mood is rather gloomy. The community has been carrying out protests for over a month now and they will carry on and now more than ever with more force until a political solution for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka will be found.
Thiruchchoti Thiru, Spokesperon of the Tamil Coordination committee said, "It's time doors are opened to everyone to see what happened behind closed doors with all these high artillery bombings there were thousands killed and injured where are their bodies? Sri Lanka should answer for that. It's not a one man's war so it's a war of a people, a community. So it cannot end only when there is a political solution otherwise it will go on. We are living in a free world, we are living in a democratic world so we will do what we want against oppression."
