London:
An 18-year-old boy was jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for branding his friend's dog with cigarettes and brutally beating the animal to death in a "very disturbing case".
Lewis Modlinsky, attacked the dog during a day-long beating when his best friend was in hospital giving birth. He fractured the dogs ribs, ruptured her liver, damaged lungs and burned her with a cigarette, a court heard.
Modlinsky has now been jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals following the 'significant torture' of two-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, Jager, Metro.co.uk reported.
Manchester and Salford court heard how he attacked the pet while its owner was in labour and abandoned the dead animal in a baby blanket.
The dog's owner Sammii Peers, 24, called Modlinsky a scumbag and said, "The guy I called my best friend killed my beautiful angel the day I went into labour. He took my precious from me and on the day that was meant to be the best day of my life".
Modlinsky initially claimed he could not remember the beating but later admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dog by inflicting multiple blunt force trauma, physical violence, burns and scratches.
Jailing him, Craig Harris said, "This has been a very disturbing case. The poor dog suffered significant torture over a number of hours that resulted in its sad death". Defending, Duncan Phillips said Modlinsky had health problems which may have contributed to the offence.
Following the sentence, Sammii said, "I don't think it's good enough. She would not even have defended herself. She would have just taken it. She loved us with all her heart. I don't understand why he's only got 18 weeks for it."
