Thousands clash in central China over land compensation

Hong Kong: Thousands of people in central China's Anhui Province have clashed with police over alleged inadequate payment for land, a human rights watchdog said.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy in a statement yesterday said that the clashes, that started in Meilong town of Chizhou city on Wednesday, have left 30 people injured so far, including the town's mayor, and damaging two police cars.

The center said residents expected compensation of USD 7,480 for each mu of land (about 0.067 hectare), but the government would only offer USD 2,313 for each mu.

Thousands of people blocked roads in Meilong and clashed with hundreds of police officers brought to disperse the crowd by the mayor, who was later beaten up by the mob, the center said, quoting confirmations from the police and town office.

A staff member at the Chizhou municipal party committee office denied the mayor was injured and said he had "no idea" about the reported incident.
