Three Teenagers Struck by Gunfire on School Trip in France

Paris: French officials say a mentally ill man opened fire on a group of students with a hunting rifle during a high school trip, wounding three - one of them seriously.

Education Minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said all three students were hospitalized after Friday's shooting in the town of Vezelay, in the Burgundy region 230 kilometers (145 miles) southeast of Paris.

The office of the mayor of Paris, the students' hometown, said that a man known for being mentally ill took aim at them with a hunting rifle. The man was holed up in his home.

The education minister said the injured students were aged 16 to 17.

The students from a private school in Paris were on a visit to Vezelay, renowned for its 12th-century hilltop basilica. Vezelay also attracts pilgrims.
