US Secretary of State John Kerry is sending his top diplomat to New Delhi to prepare the ground work for his visit to the country to attend the India-US Strategic Dialogue later this summer.
The Deputy Secretary of State, William Burns, is headed to New Delhi to continue the "productive dialogue", the India and the US are now enjoying in the wide range of political, economic, and security issues, the State Department spokesman, Patrick Ventrell, told reporters in Washington on Wednesday.
"The strategic partnership with India is of great importance to the United States and one in which both our governments are continuing to invest," Mr Ventrell told reporters without giving the exact dates of Mr Burn's travel to India.
During his India trip, Mr Burns will exchange views with his counterparts on how to grow the trade and investment relationship and expand the energy and climate change cooperation, including how to further advance the civil nuclear cooperation.
"The deputy also looks forward to discuss regional issues, including our mutual goals for greater cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and in Afghanistan where we welcome the leading role India is playing in fostering regional economic integration and spurring private sector investment," Mr Ventrell said.
Mr Burns visit will kick in motion the series of high-level visits between the two countries in the next few weeks, culminating in John Kerry's maiden trip to India as the top American diplomat during which he will co-chair the India-US Strategic Dialogue.
The high-level engagement between India and the United States is all set to gather steam in the second term of the Obama Administration, with a series of dialogues and bilateral visits, including that of the Cabinet rank officials being scheduled in the next few months that will cover a whole range of bilateral and regional issues between the two countries.
Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will travel to Washington for the annual Homeland Security Dialogue with his American counterpart, Janet Napolitano, later this month.
The Union Human Resources Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, is also scheduled to visit the country later this month for talks with his American counterparts and leaders in the education sector.
The Union Minister for Non-Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, is also likely to make a trip to the US to attend a conference.
Several Indian Cabinet Minister are also expected to visit Washington for the annual summit of the US India Business Council on July 11. The meeting of the India US CEO Forum has been scheduled for July 10-11.
Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram during his meeting with the Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, early this month suggested that the next round of India US Economic Dialogue be held along with the CEO Forum meeting on July 10-11. The Treasury is looking at the dates, but hasn't confirmed it yet.
