Trump Tower has gained even more renown now that Donald Trump, is soon to be America's 45th president.

New York, United States : The glass and steel skyscraper -- accented with gold, of course -- glistens on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue in the heart of Midtown.

On the ground level, tourists and wealthy New Yorkers shop for expensive trinkets. On the upper floors, the rich and (sometimes) famous live in splendiferous grandeur.

Trump Tower, one of New York's most famous buildings, has gained even more renown now that Donald Trump, its most famous resident, is soon to be America's 45th president.

The high-rise mirrors everything that Americans have come to understand about their enigmatic president-elect -- its brash, bombastic, ostentatious style is one the 70-year-old real estate mogul embraced on the campaign trail.

He even hosted his television reality show, "The Apprentice," in the vertical palace he conceived and built as the crown jewel of his real estate empire.

Trump has said he expects to spend a good amount of time during his presidency -- just how much is still not clear -- in his luxurious tower suites.

Security headaches

It would be unorthodox for a US president to spend vast amounts of time living anywhere but the White House. Experts say it would also pose a security headache for the Secret Service teams tasked with protecting him.

Part of the security challenge is the public nature of Trump Tower, with its cavernous marble-filled atrium and high-end stores including Gucci dotting the lower level of the building. Tiffany's and Harry Winston are nearby.

The building dates back to well before the September 11, 2001 attacks and has not been reinforced under new tougher security standards.

It is unlikely to be quite as accessible to the public after Trump takes the presidential oath in Washington on January 20.

Prominent in the building, of course, are numerous Trump-branded establishments: Trump Grille, Trump Bar, Trump Ice Cream Parlor, Trump Store and shop windows dedicated to promoting bags and jewelry designed and marketed by his eldest daughter Ivanka.

The 58-story skyscraper was built by Trump from 1979 to 1983, a symbol of an era when he scored some of his greatest commercial successes in Manhattan's real estate scene.

It is also where he launched his improbable presidential campaign in June 2015, descending down a golden escalator and into the lobby for his first campaign event.

Seated at a table at Trump Bar, Jeanne and Jerry Wagner, a couple on vacation from South Dakota, said they had been dreaming of their visit to the swanky building for months.

"I think he is a lot like JFK in a lot of ways -- minus the age," Jeanne Wagner said.

"I think most people are now embracing the fact that it is a hopeful thing -- instead of all the negativity."

A short distance away, two businessmen having lunch say they also have been heartened by Trump's election, even if most people in New York dislike him.

Protest hub

Trump Tower has been the scene of massive protests over the past several days, creating traffic chaos and posing yet another security nightmare.

New Yorkers "may tone down the protests, but they will never embrace him. But that's New York, and New York is not America!" said one of the businessmen, who identified himself only as Elliott.

On "The Apprentice," Trump used his now famous boardroom to deliver his dreaded "You're fired!" to a string of contestants seeking jobs in the Trump Organization and celebrities playing for charity.

It was his most famous catchphrase until he popularized his "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

The top floors of Trump Towers, off-limits to the public, house the luxurious Trump family apartments, with gilded furnishings draped in velvet and velour, as far as one can discern magazine photo spreads.

Other celebrities live there -- Bruce Willis is said to rent an apartment there. Past residents include Michael Jackson and Liberace.

The building is now the headquarters for Trump's political operation that until last week focused on getting him elected.

It has been transformed into the nerve center for senior aides tasked with the daunting job of vetting future cabinet members for the new Trump administration.
