Ankara, Turkey:
Turkey's state run news agency says Turkish jets have carried out cross-border strikes against Kurdish rebel positions in Northern Iraq, killing 20 alleged terrorists.
Today's strikes come as Turkey's military is reeling from a failed coup by a faction within the armed forces and appear to be an attempt to show that the forces are on top of security matters.
Authorities have rounded up close to 9,000 people including 115 generals, 350 officers and some 4,800 other military personnel for alleged involvement in the takeover.
Officials today raised the death toll from the attempted coup to 240 government supporters. At least 24 coup plotters were also killed.
The government says a US based Muslim cleric was the mastermind behind the failed take over and has demanded his extradition.
