Two confirmed dead in Norway bridge collapse

Two confirmed dead in Norway bridge collapse
Oslo: Rescue workers on Thursday pulled a second body from the rubble of an under-construction bridge that collapsed in central Norway a day earlier, police said.

The victim, a construction worker, was excavated in the early morning from a mountain of debris at the accident site near the city of Trondheim, according to police.

"The last missing person after the bridge collapse... has now been retrieved from the area and is confirmed dead," police said in a statement.

The other fatality was a person driving a car under the bridge when it collapsed on Wednesday, while five others were hospitalised.

Rescue dogs and witness testimony had given indications where to look for the missing worker, but digging him out was difficult, public broadcaster NRK reported.

It had been a race against time, as the rubble contained fresh cement which was hardening fast.

According to the Verdens Gang daily, the company responsible for the site said that formwork being used in the construction of the bridge had given way.
