Detroit: Gunfire broke out on Wednesday evening at a Detroit barbershop known for gambling activity, leaving at least two men dead, police say.

The shootings happened at around 6 p.m. at Rockies barbershop, said police spokeswoman Kelly Miner. She said nine men were shot and two of them were confirmed dead.

Police had initially said three people were dead, but later revised that number. Miner said police have confirmed that all the victims were male.

Details were sketchy because police were still investigating what happened, and it wasn't yet clear how many people opened fire.

Police Chief James Craig said told reporters at the scene that "suspects engaged a couple of victims" before "several shots were fired." He said it's not known if any of the victims fired back.

According to Miner, two cars pulled up outside the barbershop, and people in the vehicles exchanged gunfire with each other.

"Somehow someone shot into the building, and that's when people rushed out of the building and were running into other area businesses for cover," she said. Miner said both of the dead men were inside the barbershop.

The barbershop is in a strip mall along a major road on the city's east side, and Craig said it's a known site for illegal gambling.

"We're not sure if this was over a bad debt. We have no idea," Craig said. "We know it's a barbershop and gambling has occurred in this location."

Craig told reporters that police were looking for two vehicles that the suspects may have been using, a 2004 white Chevrolet Impala that may have a broken window and bullet holes in the back, and a 2004 black Impala.

The barbershop is part of a business strip that includes a Chinese restaurant, auto repair shops and a convenience store. Police used crime scene tape to cordon off several blocks around the shooting scene.
