Two men killed in shooting, stabbing at German court

Frankfurt, Germany: Two men were killed on Friday when an assailant opened fire at a German court in the western city of Frankfurt and then stabbed them with a knife, police said.

A police spokesman said a 47-year-old suspect was arrested.

The two men, aged 45 and 50, died of their wounds soon after the attack, which occurred at the entrance of the courthouse.

The local prosecutor's office said the two victims were heading to court for a retrial over the killing of the assailant's brother in 2007.

They had been acquitted for the stabbing death in 2008 but a federal court overturned the verdict and the case was reopened on Wednesday.

State justice minister Eva Kuehne-Hoermann told reporters there had been "no sign of an escalation" during the first hearing.

"We are deeply shocked," she said.
