UK Attorney-General in trouble over hiring illegal migrant

London: The job of Britain's first female Attorney-General Baroness Scotland is in doubt on Monday as it emerged that the UK Border Agency has raided the home of an illegal migrant employed by her as cleaner.

As some Labour MPs suggested that Scotland's position had become untenable, senior government sources said that her fate would be decided by the investigation being conducted by the Border Agency in charge of visas.

Scotland has already sacked Loloahi Tapui, 27, and assured Downing Street that she carried out checks on the status of Tapui, a Tongan, before hiring her as housekeeper.

But if the inquiry finds that those checks were not sufficiently rigorous, she could lose her job as senior law officer and may be fined 10,000 pound.

Fifty four-year old Scotland is the first female Attorney General since the post was created in 1315.She was the most prominent black woman in the Government and a leading voice on racial, feminist and equality issues.
