UK Election Results LIVE Updates: Keir Starmer will be Britain's next prime minister.

UK Election 2024 LIVE Updates: The UK's Labour Party swept to power after winning the country's general election, crossing the 326-seat threshold for a working majority in the House of Commons.

Keir Starmer will be Britain's next prime minister with his centre left Labour Party expected to win a huge majority in a parliamentary election, ending 14 years of often tumultuous Conservative government by trouncing Rishi Sunak's party.

Rishi Sunak conceded defeat after multiple cabinet members lost their seats and the scale of the Tory defeat became clear. 

In his farewell speech, he apologised to the public before leaving Downing Street to tender his resignation as prime minister to King Charles III: "I am sorry".

Britain's tax burden is set to hit its highest since just after World War Two, net debt is almost equivalent to annual economic output, living standards have fallen, and public services are creaking, especially the much cherished National Health Service which has been dogged by strikes.

The UK general election marks a turning point for the country with Labour returning to power after 14 years of Conservatives in Downing Street. 

Here are the five biggest takeaways from a dramatic night:

Labour landslide, but not historic 
Labour won 412 seats in the 650-seat parliament with only three seats left to declare, guaranteeing the centre-left party a whopping majority after 14 years in opposition. 

Hard-right breakthrough 
The anti-immigration Reform UK, led by Brexit talisman Nigel Farage, fired a shot across the bows of the establishment by winning more than four million votes, the third highest vote share of any party.  

Conservative catastrophe 
"Massacre, catastrophe, Waterloo..." there was no shortage of words to describe the depths of the defeat for the Tories, who won a landslide only five years ago but looked set to be reduced to around 120 seats.  

Scottish nationalists in crisis 
The Scottish nationalists suffered a terrible evening, with former first minister and independence figurehead Nicola Sturgeon admitting that "it's not a good night" for the Scottish National Party (SNP). 

Lib Dem comeback 
The return of the pro-EU Lib Dems as the third largest party and a major force in Westminster is one of the election's more unlikely stories following its dismal showing in 2019.

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman won the newly-created Fareham and Waterlooville constituency in the 2024 UK general election. The Conservative Party leader defeated Labour's Gemma Furnivall by a margin of over 6,000 votes.

Following her victory, the right-wing leader issued an apology to the public for the Conservative Party's performance over the past 14 years. "I'm sorry that my party didn't listen to you," she said in a press conference. "The Conservative party has let you down."

The Indian-origin MP acknowledged that the party had failed to keep its promises and acted entitled to the voters' support without delivering on their commitments.
