The United States and Cuba, moving to restore ties after decades of Cold War enmity, made progress on Thursday in historic talks, a US State Department official said.
The official was referring to discussions between Secretary of State John Kerry and Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez, the first ministerial-level talks between the two countries since 1958.
The countries' Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro were to both attend a regional summit on Friday and on Saturday in Panama.
"Secretary Kerry and Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez had a lengthy and very constructive discussion this evening. The two agreed they made progress and that we would continue to work to resolve outstanding issues," the State Department official said in a statement.
