A Russian court on Tuesday denied bail for US reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested on charges of espionage for which he faces up to 20 years in prison.

A judge read out the ruling saying his detention "should remain in place", after which Mr Gershkovich responded in Russian: "All understood. Thank you very much."
