'Tiger' Memon (L) and Chhota Shakeel (R)
Washington:
The United States has slapped sanctions on Chhota Shakeel and Ibrahim 'Tiger' Memon, top aides of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, for their alleged role in drug trafficking in South Asia. As a result, US citizens are prohibited from conducting financial or commercial transactions with the pair, and any assets they may have under US jurisdiction are frozen.
India believes Dawood lives in Pakistan and is the alleged mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai bombings that left over 250 dead. The US says its action is aimed at targeting "the nexus of crime and terrorism in South Asia".
The US Department of the Treasury's Office has designated his aides as narcotics traffickers, citing their ties to the "D-Company," which it called "one of the world's most notorious criminal organizations.".
According to the US, Chhota Shakeel, who is 57, coordinates D-Company activities, while Tiger, who is 52, handles its organised-crime and terror organizations.
The US pointed out that Memon, who "controls the organization's businesses across South Asia" is wanted for his alleged involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bombings.
Interpol has issued provisional arrest warrants or "red notices" for both Shakeel and Memon, who are Indian nationals.
