US ship which carried Laden's body arrives in Australia

Melbourne: A US supercarrier that took Osama bin Laden's body out to sea has reached the Western Australian port of Fremantle with 4,700 American sailors on board.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, deployed since November, have been aiding US forces in the Middle East as well as taking part in an exercise with the Indian Navy.

The ship is expected to stay in Fremantle for about two days.

The port visit will include crew working with the elderly, visiting sick children and helping at animal refuges.

The visit comes as Australia and the US strengthen their defence alliance, with the first contingent of US marines arriving in Darwin earlier this month.
