The gunman who slaughtered 20 young children and six adults at a US school forced his way into the building, police said Saturday.
Lt. Paul Vance of Connecticut State Police said the man, identified in press reports as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was not let into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, voluntarily.
"We have established the point of entry," Vance told reporters. "I can tell you it's believed he was not voluntarily let into the school at all, that he forced his way into the school."
Investigators have found good evidence at both the school and another crime scene where the suspect - who apparently committed suicide after the rampage - reportedly killed his mother.
"Our investigators at the crime scene, the school and secondarily at the secondary crime scene ... did produce some very, very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use in hopefully painting the complete picture as to how, and more importantly, why, this occurred," Vance said.
A woman at the school who survived the shooting is doing well and will be a key part of the probe, he added.
"She is doing fine. She's - she has been treated, and she'll be instrumental in this investigation, as I'm sure you can understand," Vance said.
On Friday, the gunman shot dead 18 children inside the school and two more died of their wounds shortly afterwards. Six adults, including the school principal, also perished in one of America's worst mass shootings.
Authorities have offered little clues as to the motive for the attack in Newtown, a wooded and picturesque small town northeast of New York City.
