Washington:
The United States will transfer the Parwan detention facility to the control of Afghanistan by Monday, the Pentagon has announced after a phone conversation between Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel.
The detention facility is a US-run prison located next to the Bagram airfield in Parwan province of
Afghanistan.
"Secretary Hagel spoke with Afghan President Karzai about an agreement reached to transfer the detention facility in Parwan to the sovereign control of Afghanistan on Monday," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said yesterday.
The agreement follows an intensified round of discussions this week between US and Afghan officials, he said in a statement.
Mr Hagel welcomed Mr Karzai's commitment that the transfer will be carried out in a way that ensures the safety of the Afghan people and coalition forces by keeping individuals considered dangerous in a secure and humane manner in accordance with Afghan law, the press secretary said.
