US vows to work with India to defeat terror
Washington: The United States has strongly condemned the blast at Pune's German Bakery this weekend and pledged to keep cooperating with New Delhi in fighting extremism.

"We are working together as never before to combat terrorism. The United States and India, since the Mumbai attacks, are working together to enhance information collection, intelligence sharing, and analysis capabilities, and our governments are sharing significant information to help safeguard our countries. The information we have shared so far has been quite unprecedented, and we intend to continue working with the Government of India to try and protect our two societies from these types of attacks," acting deputy department spokesman Gordon Duguid said on Tuesday.

The attack on the German Bakery is the first major attack on Indian soil since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which led to growing cooperation between the United States and India in areas such as intelligence gathering.

The Obama government says the United States stands ready to assist India in the current investigation. However, an obstacle to cooperation is the fact that India has yet to get access to David Coleman Headley, an American who went from being a US government informer to an alleged reconnaissance agent for the Lashkar e Taiba.

Headley, who is under indictment in the US for his role in 26/11, is said to have surveyed the German bakery in Pune on one of his many trips to India. Allowing India to interrogate Headley would prove that the US is serious about tackling terror.
