Washington: The United States expressed support on Saturday for the announcement by EU leaders giving Russia a week to reverse course in Ukraine or face a new round of sanctions.
The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has been ordered to produce options for new sanctions within a week, said EU President Herman Van Rompuy after a meeting with leaders in Brussels.
"We welcome the European Council's consensus today to show strong support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to prepare further sanctions for consideration in coming days," said National Security Spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.
"We are working closely with the EU and other partners to hold Russia accountable for its illegal actions in Ukraine, including through additional economic sanctions," she added.
"We remain committed to supporting Ukraine as it seeks a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and call on Russia to immediately remove its military, including troops and equipment, from Ukraine and end its illicit support to the separatists."
The sanctions plan came after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko visited Brussels to urge the EU to take tougher steps against Russia which he accused of "military aggression and terror."
Fears are growing that the confrontation on the EU's eastern borders could engulf the whole continent after Russia sent troops to back a new offensive by pro-Kremlin rebels in southeastern Ukraine.
