US: Widow wants dead husband's sperm

New York: A Manhattan widow has sought a court order to extract sperm from her dead husband's body so that she can start a family.

Victoria Chege, whose husband George Kamau, 37, committed suicide on Monday, has asked the court to okay the extraction of sperm, arguing that "time is of the essence," The New York Post reported.

In her petition, she said Kamau "expressed his desire to have children so that his legacy may continue," and "would have consented to the current petition."

"The sperm [of the] deceased George Kamau must be harvested and frozen as soon as possible from the time of his death or it will be useless," Chege said, as quoted by The Post.

Kamau's body is reportedly still in Connecticut but the wife plans to bury him in New York.

The Sperm and Embryo Bank of New Jersey, which could perform the extraction, needs a court order before performing the operation.

Chege argued that she needed to hold onto the sperm "so that Etaghua Asefa, family friend and appointed surrogate, may someday give birth to the child he wanted but was prevented from conceiving."
