Conakry, Guinea: The American ambassador to the United Nations has told the people of Guinea that the United States will help them fight Ebola over "the long haul."

Samantha Power is visiting the countries hardest hit by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that has killed nearly 5,000 people.

She met on Sunday with religious leaders in Guinea and told them: "We have got to overcome the fear and the stigma that are associated with Ebola." Fear that the disease is an automatic death sentence and the social stigma associated with it has led many people to hide in their homes rather than seek medical care, fueling the disease's spread.

The World Health Organization says more than 10,000 people are believed to have been infected so far.
