US woman burned in apparent attack: Reports

Washington: A young black woman was seriously burned in an attack in the US state of Louisiana, allegedly by assailants who set her ablaze and scrawled KKK on her car, US media reported on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Sunday evening while Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, was taking a walk in a park in Winnsboro, Louisiana, authorities said.

Ms Moffitt, 20, told police that three hooded men doused her with a flammable liquid and ignited it, thenewsstar.com reported.

Police also said her car had been marked with the letters KKK, for Ku Klux Klan, in what appeared to be toothpaste.

Ms Moffitt was in critical condition in the local hospital with extensive burns, thenewsstar.com reported.

"We should not jump to conclusions. I'm not completely convinced it was a racial incident. We should stay out of the way of the investigation as the police seek those who did this," said Winnsboro mayor Jackie Johnson, who like the victim is black.
