Washington: In a horrific attack, a 75-year-old woman's eye was knocked out of its socket after she was gored by a deer in an animal sanctuary in the US.

The incident occurred behind a locked gate at the Survival Outreach Sanctuary in Spring Hill, Florida, on Friday.

Sylvia Fernandez, a director of the sanctuary, suffered a serious eye injury when she was gored by a deer.

The victim's sister called for help in a phone call to the Pasco County Sherriff's Office, explaining that Fernandez was in a recreational vehicle (RV) in the woods of north Pasco County, 'Tampa Bay Times' reported.

She told the dispatcher her sister has "just been gored by a deer". She also said that Fernandez's "eye is hanging out" and she has a gash on her arm.

Fernandez was airlifted to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Gary Morse, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the deer was still in his enclosure at the sanctuary and the case was under investigation.

A lion had escaped for a short time last week from the sanctuary. Officers had to tranquilise the lion with a dart gun and put her in another cage.

Judy Watson, owner of the sanctuary, was then charged with a first degree misdemeanour for improper caging of a class one animal.
