Walls broken to move obese woman to hospital in Bangkok

Bangkok: Authorities in the Thai capital had to build an external lift and demolish two walls on Thursday to take one of the world's heaviest women to hospital after she was unable to get out of her own flat.

Umnuayporn Tongprapai, who weighs in at 274 kilogrammes (602 pounds), says she hasn't been outside her home for three years because of her size.

But the 40-year-old needed urgent hospital attention for a tumour on her leg so neighbours contacted the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, sparking an operation involving engineers, rescue workers, doctors and nurses.

Umnuayporn said she had faith in the team helping her.

"They told me there's nothing to worry about and to relax and not to think too much," she told reporters who had squeezed into her small flat to witness the unusual event.

As she was taken down from her third floor flat on the industrial lift, Umnuayporn waved to those who had gathered around to watch outside the apartment building.

Bangkok's governor was on hand to watch the operation and paid tribute to the patient's state of mind.

Umnuayporn will be treated in hospital but it's not known how or when she'll return home.
