Why are birds dropping dead from US skies?

Arkansas: The mysterious deaths of Blackbirds on New Year's Eve in Arkansas and similar other incidents are receiving a lot of attention in blogosphere. Some bloggers are calling it an "aflockalypse" - but there are more serious discussions too.

Biologists say that these mass die-offs happen all the time. These incidents are usually unrelated can be caused by disease or pollution. In Arkansas, experts believe some sort of human activity may be responsible.

"We know from witness accounts that lots of folks heard very loud noises, repeatedly, noises on the order of something like commercial fireworks. These same folks saw birds...flying low across the ground and smashing into their homes and cars and mailboxes and so forth," said Dr. Scott Wright, Scientist, Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Centre.

While some experts feel that the New Year fireworks could have caused the bird deaths, other ornithologists suspect the cold and wet weather experienced in Arkansas on the 31st December.

"We have not found any correlation other than, from what we have heard, in Arkansas, it's suspected that the birds also died from blunt force trauma, so that would be similar or identical to what we've seen in the Louisiana birds so far," said Dr. John Fischer, Director of University of Georgia's Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study.
