Why Egypt is crucial to United States
So why is Egypt important to United States? The country has been America's closest ally in the Arab world but for the first time seeing the wave of protests Washington has distanced itself from Mubarak.

For years, Washington has been a big supporter of the Mubarak regime giving it billions of dollars in military and economic aid.

For America, Egypt is a crucial ally in the Middle East peace process and the fight against extremism and a vital counterweight to Iran.

The big fear in Washington is that if Mubarak goes, then groups hostile to America like the Muslim Brotherhood could take charge. Such leaders would also end a critical peace treaty with Israel, the US's most important ally.

The Muslim Brotherhood is the biggest opposition and Islamic group in Egypt, their goal is to create a state ruled by sharia law.

The US is also worried about access to the Suez canal, through which it sends nuclear warships regularly. So it's vital for their military strategy in the Middle East.
