Arkansas:
A woman in the US has conceived twice in two weeks. The couple discovered this after the wife went in for a second ultrasound test.
Julia Grovenberg and her husband Todd were thrilled when she conceived after trying to have a baby for a long time. But the news that came next was something that knocked the couple from Arkansas off their feet. Julia had conceived twice in two weeks and her sonogram shows two embryos at different stages.
The babies are not considered twins and experts describe the pregnancy as superfetation. This is a rare phenomenon, when a child is conceived while the mother is already pregnant.
Dr. Michael Johnson, OB/GYN department at UCLA Medical Center says, "It is fascinating because, in general, it's very difficult to prove. There's always been speculation as to whether it does exist in humans; it definitely exists in other species, but to definitively document it in human conception is exceptionally difficult."
Doctors are hoping that the boy baby catches up with his older sister before birth. Both babies are healthy and are expected to be born sometime around the first of December.
