A woman was reportedly found beheaded in a back garden in north London on Thursday.
Police confirmed that a woman was found dead at a property in the suburb of Edmonton just after 1pm (1200 GMT).
British media reported that she had been beheaded. But police would not comment on how she died or whether there was any possible terrorist connection to the killing.
A man has been arrested and is in custody.
Scotland Yard said in a statement: "Police were called to an address in Nightingale Road at 13.07 today to reports of a stabbing incident.
"On arrival officers discovered a female collapsed in a garden area.
"A man has been detained and remains in custody."
