Prague: A woman stabbed a student to death and wounded two girls and a police negotiator in a rampage at a secondary school in the Czech Republic on Tuesday, according to police.
"A 16-year-old boy died from his injuries despite all efforts by emergency services," police spokeswoman Jana Kroutilova told AFP.
"The police detained a 26-year-old woman from the (eastern) Ostrava region," she said after the attack in the town of Zdar nad Sazavou, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) southeast of Prague.
The motive was not immediately clear, police said. According to Czech media, the woman had attacked a girl at the school, then killed the boy who came to help her.
She let doctors treat the injured girl while taking another as a hostage, and before being immobilised with an electric taser, she injured the hostage as well as a police negotiator.
One girl was seriously injured and needed surgery. The other girl and the negotiator were treated for minor injuries while a third girl who saw the events unfold was suffering from shock.
The murder happened at a secondary school focused on teaching economics and business as well as hairdressing and cooking.
According to Czech media, the woman had already stabbed a teacher in an elementary school canteen full of children near Ostrava in May 2012.
At that time, she tried to kidnap a seven-year-old girl and stabbed a teacher protecting her. She then took the girl hostage, but gave her up after negotiations with the police.
The teacher survived the attack.
Media said the woman was diagnosed with schizophrenia and treated at an institution until February this year, when she was released into home care.
