Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, urged students and staff to shelter in place after local police received an unconfirmed report of a person on campus with a gun.
"There have been no confirmations or sightings of this person," the Ivy League school said in a posting on its Website.
"We've notified our community," said spokesman Tom Conroy, who said warnings of the incident had been sent to students, faculty and staff by e-mail and text messages.
