Yellow lobster 1 in 30 million

Yellow lobster 1 in 30 million
Providence, Rhode Island: It's not made of gold, but a yellow lobster pulled out from Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay is very rare.

How rare? Try one in 30 million.

Lobsterman Denny Ingram says he found the lobster in one of his pots in the bay's East Passage last week. It is golden on the top and bright yellow on both sides.

Genetic Variations are responsible for colour changes. There have been other colours in the lobster rainbow.

A blue lobster was pulled out was pulled out of a trap off the coast of New Hampshire last year. They are a little more common than the yellows, about one in five million.

But the white lobster is the king of them all. It was found off Cape Cod in 2004. The probability of a white lobster is one in a hundred million.

Lobster shells are generally either red, yellow and blue. Sometimes they appear green because of the mixture of these colors. The red becomes dominant, however, when they are cooked.

It's unusual colour is also apparently good luck for Denny Ingram's Yellow lobster, who will not be heading to anyone's dinner table.

Instead of becoming dinner, it will be kept on display at the fisherman's co-op in Newport, Rhode Island.
