Your Father Should Have 'Beaten the Hell' Out of You: Judge to Accused

Latrez Cummings (Left) stands with his attorney Robert Slameka in court on June 19 in Detroit

Detroit: A judge has sentenced a young man to six months in jail for a mob attack on a Detroit-area motorist after telling the 19-year-old that his father should have "beaten the hell" out of him to discourage him from committing crimes.

Judge James Callahan's remarks occurred on Thursday when Latrez Cummings said his father wasn't around when he was growing up.

Cummings and four others have pleaded guilty to assaulting Steve Utash, who was in a coma for days after the April 2 attack. Cummings was the last to be sentenced.

The judge told Cummings that he needed a father or "someone to discipline you. Someone to beat the hell out of you when you made a mistake."

Prosecutor Lisa Lindsay says the six-month jail sentence is too light.
