The 2024 US presidential election will be held in November. US citizens will vote on Tuesday, November 5 to elect their next President. It is a two-way contest - between the current Vice President, Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic presidential candidate and US's former President Donald Trump, who is her Republican rival. Donald Trump is seeking a second term in the top office after he lost the previous US election against current President Joe Biden. President Biden, however, has decided not to seek a second term in office, though he had initially campaigned for the post. Months before the election, President Biden decided to back out and instead, suggested his deputy, Kamala Harris for the top post.

While Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is the Democratic vice presidential candidate and Kamala Harris's running mate, US Senator for Ohio, JD Vance is the Republican vice presidential candidate and Donald Trump's running mate.Latest opinion polls show Kamala Harris leading by a comfortable margin. Though Donald Trump is trailing, the contest is very close, and either candidate takes the lead every few days. Swing states will therefore play a very crucial role in deciding who will be the next President.Swing states are states where both Democratic and Republican parties have similar levels of support among voters. These states are crucial as they have the potential to sway the outcome of the elections. The swing states are Georgia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

On election day - November 5, voters - registered US citizens - will also determine the fate of the US Congress and state governments. After the newly elected members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are sworn into office, the US Congress will convene in a joint session to officially count and certify the results of the presidential election. This will happen on January 6, 2025.Based on this, the next President and Vice President of the United States will take their oath of office on January 20, 2025.More than 158.4 million people voted in the 2020 US Presidential Election, amounting to 62.8% of people of voting age, according to Pew Research Center.
